Castlemaine is situated 120km distance from Melbourne. It is the main city of the shire of Mount Alexander in central Victoria.
Castlemaine began as the centre of the Mount Alexander goldfields in 1850. It was briefly larger than Melbourne, as that city's population moved to Castlemaine to seek its fortune. It was the richest alluvial gold field in world history and that title has not yet been surpassed.
KR Castlemaine is currently building its base in Castlemaine. The Don KRC Castlemaine Build Project is one of the largest food manufacturing projects ever undertaken in regional Victoria and represents a substantial, long-term investment in the region.
The expansion of the site is worth more than $150M and includes an investment of some $80M in equipment and latest technology, construction of a new fit-for-purpose manufacturing plant, an upgrade of existing manufacturing facilities and construction of an amenities and administration building. The building works are set for competition at the end of 2010 and support the relocation of manufacturing operations from Spearwood (WA) and Altona (VIC).
